Pop Music on British Television 1955 - 1999

Having been discovered singing at a New Year's Eve party by a BBC producer, and an obligatory BBC pilot, she was given her own series, which seems somewhat unlikely for an unknown singer. She had not had a hit, or even made guest appearances on other people's shows at that time. Solomon had signed to Philips and EMI in the UK and released three albums from 1974 to 1976, one of which reached the top thirty. To be fair BBC2 had taken a punt on another relative unknown American the year before, John Denver.

Her own late-night show, Introducing Diane Solomon, broadcast on BBC1 beginning 8th November 1974 with resident pianist Ed Welch, one of Spike Milligan's musical sidekicks. Her first release for Philips came the same month.

Preceding her second series with an appearance on The Val Doonican Show in May 1975, The Diane Solomon Show was shown earlier in the evening this time around. Guests on this second series included George Melly and Johhnny Nash. After an appearance on Morecambe & Wise's Christmas day show in 1975 she hosted her own Christmas special the following day. She made a few guest shots on other shows over the next couple of years before seemingly disappearing. However, she reappeared in 1983 with a one-off Diane Solomon Entertains special for BBC2 and guest appearances on Pete Sayers' BBC2 show before reappearing once again, this time in the Eurovision Song Contest in the mid-eighties.

She is now a successful author back in the USA.
