Pop Music on British Television 1955 - 1999

A (very) short-lived excursion into TV by Godley and Creme, at the time probably the industry's most famous video directors.

Made by IRS's TV and movie division, CCCP in August 1984 the show was centred around a fashionable night club, The Rebellious Juke Box, owned by Meat Loaf, and run by Richard Dido (Jools Holland). Mari Wilson played the cloakroom attendant and comedians Mark Arden and Steve Frost were the bouncers. It took almost a year to make it to TV in the UK.

Written by Kim Fuller and Vicky Pile it took the ideas of 1978's Revolver and somehow trashed it. The comedy was poor and often interrupted the live music. Like Max Headroom it seemed to expect music to prop the show up, but served its subject badly. It only lasted two episodes.

It inevitably featured acts somehow connected to the Copeland's music empire, Jools Holland, Stewart Copeland, The Lords Of The New Church, General Public, and videos by Sting and REM.
