Pop Music on British Television 1955 - 1999

In June 1964 Southern Television director Mike Mansfield put out a call for sixty pop experts between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five to participate in a new quiz show. It would be hosted by Muriel Young with regulars Penny Valentine (Disc weekly magazine reporter) and Tony Hall (also a contributor to Disc).

A pilot show was likely recorded on 16th May 1963 with Billy Fury as a guest, performing When Will You Say I Love You.

Each week two teams of three males and three females would be quizzed on all aspects of popular music, while celebrities and pop fans compete to see who knows the most about pop music. Each show was recorded before a studio audience the Thursday before transmission.

The show lasted one three month series while a sequel, Pop The Question was launched October 1965.
